ADDITIONAL FUNCTION OF PACKAGING
Protecting and selling packaging
is an old saying. However, there is much more potential in wrapping products,
which is often viewed as just garbage. These four examples show why it pays to
find out more about additional functions for the packaging to worry about.
Packaging’s do not have the best
reputation in an affluent society they are the hangover that we all suffer from
after a stationary or online shopping spree. Cardboard boxes, plastic sleeves,
Styrofoam worms, and sacks fill our rubbish bins, which we all have to dispose
of for a fee. PET bottles and other plastic waste are taking up more and more
ocean space for themselves.
The amount of packaging is increasing worldwide.
The call for packaging-free
supermarkets gets louder and louder. However, such a measure would only be the
proverbial drop in the bucket and by no means be able to stop a megatrend.
Prosperity is increasing worldwide, and with it also quantity of packaging, on.

The circulatory system as a solution
If we don't all want to suffocate
in our packaging waste in a few years, we must focus more on the circular
economy (Cradle to Cradle) set. But, unfortunately, the way there is a long
one. Intermediate steps are therefore necessary to contain the flood of
packaging waste as quickly as possible.
Additional functions for packaging
One way to do this is to think of
additional features for the packaging. In the ideal case, the packaging then
becomes a product itself, or at least a substantial part of it. A welcome side
effect of this strategy is that it makes the product itself "more
valuable." The producer can either obtain a higher price for this. Or his
product has an additional selling point compared to competing products.
1) Smaller portions more significant margins
They pack ready meals in smaller
portions and sell them through discount chains such as dollar general. The
target group of macaroni and cheese ready-made meals is US consumers who have
to turn over every dollar twice. You often do not have the opportunity to store
food for longer. The additional benefit of the smaller packaging is that the
user can quickly prepare exactly one main meal. Even the highly price-sensitive
consumer class is prepared to pay more for this additional benefit. Almost
twice the regular price, according to a report by the Washington Post proven.
This strategy of selling food to a relatively poor group of consumers at twice
the price is morally reprehensible, but it shows how vital a simple additional
benefit can be for the consumer. However, it is not sure whether filling fewer
goods in more minor, but more than one packaging will increase the mountains of
rubbish. Bite-sized portions prevent food from draining before it is consumed.
Seafood waste is reduced. In memory of around half of all food produced in the
world ends up in the trash.
2) Longer shelf lifeless waste
Packaging innovations that can
help reduce food waste Greiner Packaging International developed from Upper
CANADA. The Theinert barrier technology (IBT) significantly extends the shelf
life of food packed in plastic cups. The consumer also benefits from more
excellent freshness. Thanks to IBT, it is no longer necessary to heat the food
at an ultra-high temperature or preserve it with preservatives. One Barrier
layer on the plastic cup ensures a significantly higher oxygen barrier in the
packaging. This increases by 20 times for cups made of polypropylene and by 30
times for cups made of polystyrene. The additional benefit of coated packaging
in this way is multiple: the content tastes better, stays fresh longer, and
increases the likelihood that it will also be eaten instead of ending up in the
garbage can.
3) conveniently for a better coffee
Coffee drinkers generally have to
choose between quick preparation or high quality: a cup is on the table within
seconds with coffee powder and hot water. In terms of taste, this brew is not
for everyone. On the other hand, brewing a great-tasting espresso from
Guatemalan organic beans takes time and the necessary equipment. Admittedly:
Nespresso and its imitators have made the way to good coffee outside of
gastronomic establishments much easier with the capsule systems. However, the
price for this is twice as high: the production of the aluminum capsules
requires many resources. And despite recycling programs, many of them land in
the trash. The kilo price for coffee consumed in this way is also included
incredible 84 euros. The Danish company SM Custom Packaging found a solution to
combine the two poles of speed and quality and act sustainably simultaneously.
The resourceful Danes use the packaging as a coffee machine.
4) Packaging is integrated into the product
Students from the Darmstadt
University of Applied Sciences demonstrate how a product's packaging only ends
up in the garbage when the product itself has become unusable. Your project:
You created packaging for a teapot that can still be used as a warmer. The
puristic solution also gets top marks in the compulsory rating. Because it
protects the jug as well as it presents it optimally. The corrugated cardboard
packaging is also pre-treated with an impregnation spray to not go up in flames
in its role as a warmer. The students were also able to win the 2016 USA Packaging
Prize with the project.
Conclusion: Why it makes sense to
think about additional functions of the packaging
Many equate packaging with the
topic of rubbish and often forget about its Basic functions. By the way,
essential functions are not always fulfilled, such as with the milk packs were
the case in the past. The potential of packaging as a seductress at the POS is
still there highly underrated. However, the four examples show in different
ways which possibilities lie dormant in the packaging. One of them is ideas
that give the user real added value. Designing the shell of products
intelligently and making it usable pays off for the producer. The device can
thus differ significantly from competing products, and a higher margin can
often also be achieved. Some of the solutions described above also show this.
Incidentally, digitization is opening up a flood of new opportunities for
integrating additional functions into packaging. Because through networking it
is possible, to communicate with packs, sacks, and co.
